ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe vast cultural heritage of Alba de Tormes attracts a large number of visitors, however the town can offer much more, for example the chance to enjoy the natural areas in the surrounding countryside. This route passes through the river plain of the River Tormes, which has been declared a Site of Community Importance. The restored mill, which serves as a cultural centre, is the start and finish of the route. Following the river bank to the south, passing a bird hide, an interpretation panel, and the recreation area, we eventually reach an old water mill, with the waterfall created by its mill race. The river bank woodland is made up of Poplars, Aspens, Alders, and Ash, which along with the Rushes, Bullrushes, Reeds and Common Osier forms an ideal habitat for birdlife; Mallards, Coots, Northern Shovelers, Great Crested Grebes, and other species such as the European Bee-Eater, the Nightingale, and Common Sandpiper. The route also takes in a visit to the island of Garcilaso, where the riverine vegetation has recently been restored.
