ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe rural district of Tierra de Vitigudino contains spectacular natural wonders like the River Huebra. This route leads from the small village of Gema to the river, where on its banks, there is an abandoned flour factory, known as the Molino de la Tomasa, and a bridge. The area is classified as a Site of Community Interest and a Special Protection Area for Birds. Along the route we pass through two types of countryside. Firstly across a Holm Oak dehesa with gentle hills, and the occasional pool that acts as a watering place for cattle. Then we begin to descend slowly to the valley of the winding River Huebra, where we suddenly come into an area with a riverine eco-system. It is common to see birds such as Black and Red Kites, Black-winged Kites, Short-toed Eagles and Booted Eagles. Along the river, Kingfishers and Otters observe the river looking for small fish, such as the Pardilla and Calandino. In the massive granite walls that line the valley of the River Huebra, Black Storks, Egyptian Vultures, and Eagle Owls all nest.
