ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThis route passes through the countryside around Hacinas, a municipality in the south-east of the province of Burgos. It is famous for the fossilised trees that have been found in the area, and the council has set up an interpretation centre called the ‘Centro del Árbol Fósil’. The ornithological route is short, but certainly does not lack charm. Immediately after leaving the village in an easterly direction, we pass through an area of vegetable plots and meadows, until we reach the Hacinas stream. Continuing along the route which follows the bank of the stream, we reach a fenced area designed to stop cattle from entering: this is the lagoon complex of the Fuentepeña Wetland, made up of ten lagoons. It had suffered from silting up, but it has now been rehabilitated, thus restoring an eco-system which provides a habitat for a large number of aquatic birds. However, without doubt the most important feature of the area is the presence of more than 40 White Stork nests, making up one of the most important colonies in the province of Burgos.
