ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThis ornithological route follows the valley of the River Voltoya, an area declared a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for Birds with the name of the ‘Valleys of Voltoya and Zorita’. Juarros de Voltoya, situated in the western part of the rural district of Campiña Segoviana, is the village where the route begins. On leaving Juarros de Voltoya, it is well worth visiting the reservoir where one can observe aquatic birds like Coots and Mallards, as well as Great Crested Grebes, Little Grebes, and Northern Shovelers. The route leads to the interesting ruins of the mill of la Irvienza through a pine wood of Maritime Pines and Stone Pines, with stands of Poplars, which is home to Green Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Shrikes, Blackbirds, European Bee-eaters, Goldfinches and Tree-creepers. At the end of the route the valley opens up and the water forms ponds where it is not unusual to see Storks and Grey Herons.
