ROUTE DESCRIPTIONIn this border area, shortly before it passes Pereña de la Ribera, the River Duero has carved some impressive meanders as it passes between rocky cliffs that are occasionally vertical. The resulting landscape of spectacular canyons can be contemplated along this route in the Natural Park of Las Arribes del Duero, a Site of Community of Interest and Special Protection Area for Birds, on the opposite bank of the river from Portugal. From Pereña de la Ribera the route follows the easy asphalt track which leads to the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Castillo. Shortly before arriving we start to see the wonderful views of the River Duero, as well as the interesting mountain known as El Berrocal, with its strange rock formations, and the Chapel perched on a promontory below the summit. From here one can observe Black Storks and birds of prey like the Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Golden Eagle, Eagle Owl and Bonelli’s Eagle, as well as other birds that inhabit the rock walls and crevices beside the River Duero.
