ROUTE DESCRIPTIONA few kilometres from Ribas de Campos, the Northern branch of the Canal de Castilla empties its waters into the River Carrión. The two combine to provide the landscape of cereal plains with a living refuge for many species of plants and animals, an added value in the form of biodiversity. Proof of this is the cataloguing of this riverbank as the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Riberas del río Carrión y afluentes”. The route starts in Ribas de Campos, and follows the River Carrión upstream on its right bank, between Poplars and riverbank vegetation, to the Campos del Canal branch, which it follows to its start at the junction of Calahorra de Ribas. During the walk we can see riverside birds such as Golden Orioles and Green Woodpeckers and also lacustrine birds such as the Black-crowned Night Heron and Grebes. It is also possible to see, with good luck and patience, the shy otter. The return to Ribas de Campos runs laterally to the Acequia de Palencia, finishing a circular route where water is the protagonist.
