ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe village of La Antigua, in León, is located in the south of the province, in the natural region of the Páramo Leonés, between the waters of the Rivers Esla and Órbigo. The ornithological route starts at Grajal de Ribera, and heads southwards on a wide track that quickly comes into a mosaic of landscape with dry land cultivations of wheat, barley, grapevines, sunflowers, etc. This anthropic ecosystem is an ideal place to find the heaviest flying bird in the world, the impressive Great Bustard, which form flocks that are visible from the path. The route turns towards the northwest just as we arrive at a Holm Oak forest, and goes back across the moor to the village of Audanzas del Valle, where the Grande stream forms a small but pleasant pool at the spot known as Laguna Grande. Here it is possible to see small lacustrine birds such as Grebes or Moorhens. However, the most representative group of birds is the steppe birds: Montagu’s and Northern Harriers, Lesser Kestrels, Little Bustards, Crested Larks, Calandra Larks, and the already mentioned Great Bustard, are included in this select group.
