ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe route ascends the valley of the River Santa Águeda from the point where it joins the River Cega, in the village of Pajares de Pedraza. This area belongs to the Sierra de Guadarrama Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB) and Site of Community Importance (SCI). From Pajares de Pedraza we take a path that follows the River Santa Águeda upstream to the deserted area with the same name, where the old medieval road to Buitrago crosses the stream next to a quaint small bridge. The riparian wood offers the opportunity to hear and see riverbank birds such as the Chaffinch, the Common Nightingale, the Goldfinch, the Eurasian Wren and the European Robin. Continuing up the medieval road we reach a forest monitoring observatory, a site that offers wonderful panoramic views of the valley, the ideal spot for the observation of rock nesting birds such as Griffon Vultures, Red-billed Choughs, Crag Martins or Black Redstarts, and for the birds that inhabit the hillsides covered by Holm Oaks and Spanish Junipers such as Eurasian Jays, Azure-winged Magpies, Southern Grey Shrikes and Stonechats.
