ADRI PALOMARES

The “Palomares” Association for Overall Rural Development was founded with the objective of promoting economic, social and cultural development through sustainable overall development. It is a non-profit organisation that brings together the majority of the region’s social and institutional actors.

The primary objective that the Association pursues is to stop the exodus of rural inhabitants, instill knowledge of this area in people that are from other places, and to reestablish population centres by promoting their economic activity, thus taking full advantage of their human , environmental and tourism capital.

The territory is predominated by flat areas that, together with a drainage network that is insufficiently developed to evacuate water and the impermeable nature of the land, has caused some areas to become flooded during periods of rain; it has also created endorheic areas in the area known as the Lagunas de Villafáfila, which is currently classified as a Nature Preserve and is a winter refuge for aquatic birds that come from northern Europe, such as the greylag goose, which, in 2010 had a population of almost 25,000 specimens, stands out because of its important populaion.

A numerous population of steppe birds is also concentrated in the Preserve, with the bustard especially (Otis tarda) standing out, with a post-reproductive population in August of around 1,000 specimens, with figures in mating season reaching 2,500 specimens; this is quite a show for bird lovers, both because of the majesticness of the species and also because of the amount of birds that we can find in a small area.

On a related note, the presence of the lesser kestrel is worth mentioning, since the Preserve is home to the largest nesting population in Castilla y León, having reached 345 couples in 2004, which was undoubtedly due to the installation of more than 300 artificial nesting boxes for this bird in the Preserve.
